Botox® is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. Although Botox® is technically a toxin, there are no serious side effects. This is because for the treatment described , it is used in extremely small amounts and does not spread throughout the body.
Our facial expressions change due to the contraction and relaxation of facial muscles. When Botox® is injected into a specific muscle it blocks the signal from the nerve to that muscle resulting in a reduced muscle activity. Therefore, allowing the overlying skin to relax and smooth out without affecting the rest of the face so the normal facial expressions are maintained. It temporarily reduces frown lines, forehead lines, smile lines around the eyes (crowÃs feet) and lines around the mouth.
During your consultation with a medical practitioner you will be assessed to establish your suitability for this treatment and the procedure will be discussed in full. you will also be asked to sign a consent form. Botox® is administered directly into muscles by very fine needles. An anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin to minimise any discomfort. The treatment usually takes about 10 -15minutes, and no recovery time is needed so you can drive afterwards.
You may start to notice an effect after 2-3 days. However this varies with individuals. The full effect can take up to 2 weeks following treatment. The initial results last an average of 3-4 months. The muscles then gradually regain their strength. After several treatments the effects may begin to last longer. Clinical trials report that individuals who have been treated over 12 months are only requiring further treatments once or twice a year. This is probably due to the fact that the muscles weaken through inactivity and/or habitual expressions are lost.
Generally Botox® is not given to those who are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying for a family or anyone suffering from severe neuromuscular disease.
Side effects are rare and temporary and mostly related to injection sites e.g. slight redness and tenderness which usually resolves within a few hours, occasional bruising which can be concealed with make up. Other side effects are temporary eyelid droop and cold and flue-like symptoms.
It is recommended to assess the result 2 weeks after treatment. A top up may be given at that time if necessary.
