Electrolysis has been used for over 100 years and has been proven to be a safe and effective method of permanent hair removal. With advancing technology, electrolysis can be a fairly comfortable treatment when performed by a skilled and experienced practitioner.

Although electrolysis can be used on any part of the body, here at HSC Clinic, we commonly use it for facial hair. Our preferred method for hair removal, either facial or body hair, is Intense Pulse Light (IPL). This is due to speed, comfort and less number of session requirements. However, for those who have light coloured hair, which will not respond to IPL, then electrolysis is a great option, as it works on any colour of hair. Similarly, those who are on photosensitive medication or who have dark skin types are not suitable for IPL or laser treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know

Electrolysis involves inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle, through which a small current is passed to destroy the root and prevent further hair growth. The follicle destruction is achieved by heat, chemical reaction or both. The method of treatment will be tailored to suit your skin type and sensitivity.

While IPL or laser hair removal is a great option for most people, it may not be suitable for others with light coloured hair, those who are on photosensitive medication or those who have dark skin types. Here at HSC Clinic, we have the expertise and various options to customise your bespoke treatment.

This will depend on the area being treated. Your treatment plan is something we will discuss at your initial consultation.

You may experience slight redness, swelling and/or irritation after treatment. This is normal and will subside within a few hours. Pin dot crusting or small scabs may also appear within the treated area. Do not pick the area at all whilst it is healing.

Treatment can be adapted to minimise discomfort. The general sensation is of a mild warming sensation or heat.

Electrolysis is low-risk and a very safe treatment. In fact, it’s the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal. However, skills and experience of the practitioner are important to deliver safe but effective treatment without damaging the surrounding skin.
